Who We Are
The GVFB provides assistance to approximately 15,000 people monthly across Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster and the North Shore. We also provide food support to 150 agencies such as housing agencies, women and children’s shelters, transition homes and after school programs, which in turn provide hot meals and snacks to thousands of people each week, including people who are unhoused.
Our mission is providing healthy food to those in need. Our vision is to create healthy communities through fair and effective food systems. Currently, the GVFB distributes 8.9 M lbs of food each year.

Position Overview
The Food Preservation Lead oversees weekly food preservation tasks, including planning and leading volunteer activities and supervision, and ensuring the food preservation area is clean, equipped, and organized.
This individual will oversee the food preservation day-to-day tasks, as well as complete any necessary research, communicate with partners and stakeholders, and lead various projects including research and development, taste testing exercises, product research, and package design.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate Food Preservation activities and ensure objectives are successfully completed.
- Lead and monitor food preservation processes, including freezing, drying, canning, pickling, and more.
- Ensure compliance with food safety regulations, such as GMP and HACCP, as needed.
- Lead Food Preservation documentation and data reporting, including monthly updates.
- Maintain records of preservation methods, safety checks, and regulatory compliance, as needed.
- Lead volunteer activities and ensure appropriate supervision and training; provide guidance to volunteers on best practices and safety procedures.
- Lead various projects including research and development, taste testing, product research, package design, and other projects, as assigned.
- Monitor and optimize preservation techniques to maximize product shelf life, maintain quality and to reduce waste.
- Conduct quality control inspections and implement corrective actions when necessary.
- Maintain food preservation equipment and inventory, and ensure cleanliness.
- Support the Operations leadership with project planning including budgeting and cost comparisons.
- Support meal and snack prep for GVFB events, such as Townhalls.
- Complete other duties as assigned by the Operations leadership team.

Qualifications and Experience
- Post-secondary education in food preservation, culinary arts, or a combination of relevant work experience.
- 1-2 years’ experience in food preservation, food production or food science role is an asset.
- Marketing, sales, and design process experience is advantageous.
- Valid FoodSafe Level 1 certification required; FoodSafe Level 2 is an asset.
- Experience with GMP and HACCP guidelines is an asset.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Familiarity with non-profit organizations is ideal.
Physical Requirements
- Physically fit and have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs on a consistent basis.
- Exposure to ambient temperatures and noisy conditions.
- The ability to walk and stand throughout the shift.
