About Us
The GVFB provides assistance to approximately 16,000 people monthly across Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster and the North Shore. We also provide food support to more than 139 community agencies such as housing agencies, women and children’s shelters, transition homes and after school programs, which in turn provide hot meals and snacks to thousands of people each week, including people who are unhoused.
Our mission is providing healthy food to those in need. Our vision is to create healthy communities through fair and effective food systems. Currently, the GVFB receives, purchases, and distributes 8 M lbs of food each year.
Position Overview
The Major Gifts Officer works closely with the Director of Development and the Development team to identify and secure gifts above the $25,000 level.
The major gifts officer will be responsible for identifying and cultivating relationships with prospective major gift donors, conducting prospect research and developing effective solicitation strategies as well as stewarding donors throughout the major giving process.
This position will also help to provide additional structure to the prospect identification process, moves management and tracking outcomes.

This is a full-time permanent position, with the opportunity to learn and grow. The successful candidate can expect a competitive base salary of $70,000 annually, depending on experience.

Key Responsibilities
- Manage existing donors, qualify prospects, and build a portfolio of donors giving at the $25,000+ level;
- Develop and apply appropriate cultivation strategies for donors and prospects;
- Develop and apply appropriate cultivation strategies for donors and prospects;
- Participate in all aspects of the gift cycle;
- Provide strong stewardship to donors to continually increase their knowledge and understanding of the GVFB and its work;
- Collaborate with the Communications Manager to implement a regular, year-round communication strategy and to ensure content accurately reflects the brand and voice of the organization;
- Monitor weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual activity to achieve individual performance measures (e.g. meetings, proposals, revenue);
- Adhere to a performance-based culture to maximize results;
- Work collaboratively with and support volunteers and other development staff to cultivate and solicit donors;
- Develop and maintain strong collaborative working relationships with other team members;
- Provide donors with tours of the warehouse or meet them at their workplace or home;
- Ensure that cultivation, solicitation and stewardship activities are tracked as actions in Raiser’s Edge in order to produce accurate activity reports;

- Demonstrated record of success in generating significant commitments ($25,000+) from donors;
- Demonstrated ability to manage a diverse portfolio and steward donors through a moves management cycle;
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and networking skills are essential;
- Ability to maintain a high level of professionalism in all circumstances;
- Ability to initiate and build relationships with prospective donors, interacting in person as well as by telephone, email and other means;
- Must be able to work evenings and weekends infrequently but as required;
- Skilled in organizing resources and establishing priorities;

Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum of 3 years of experience with major gifts in a nonprofit fundraising environment;
- Experience with a capital campaign and/or capital funding at the $10M level, within the last 3-5 years;
- Experience with donor relationship management system, Raiser’s Edge specifically is required;
- Competency in reporting and data analysis is desired;
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, Zoom / MS Teams;
- An interest in or understanding of the food system and an appreciation of food and its role in personal, social and cultural wellbeing will be asset.
