About Us
The GVFB provides assistance to approximately 15,000 people monthly across Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster and the North Shore. We also provide food support to more than 141 community agencies such as housing agencies, women and children’s shelters, transition homes and after school programs, which in turn provide hot meals and snacks to thousands of people each week, including people who are unhoused.
Our mission is providing healthy food to those in need. Our vision is to create healthy communities through fair and effective food systems. Currently, the GVFB receives, purchases, and distributes 8 M lbs of food each year.
Position Overview
The Philanthropy Officer plays a leading role in working with our Director of Development and the Development Team to create a comprehensive, long-term strategy for engaging and building relationships with current and emerging mid-level and major donors. They will cultivate relationships with individuals and corporations who have the capacity to give at the $10,000+ level. They will passionately communicate the vision of the GVFB to inform, engage and inspire donors.

Key Responsibilities
- Work closely with our Development and Communications staff in advancing the mid-level giving program, leveraging multiple channels in mid-level solicitation and communications and adding new activities as opportunities are identified.
- Apply Major Giving (MG) best practices to further the GVFB’s MG processes to identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward these donors.
- Produce, manage and monitor the execution of the stewardship plan.
- Produce grant applications, written proposals and funding reports back to donors and manage the grant cycle.
- Conduct analysis on donors currently giving $5,000+ to identify and qualify those most likely to upgrade.
- Review current prospect cohort, modify as appropriate and track and evaluate impact of mid-level approach.
- Provide recognition and ongoing stewardship for donors giving between $1,000 and $10,000.
- Secure engagement opportunities with donors including face to face meetings and tours in order to inform, inspire and elevate giving.
- Lead the development and tracking of rigorous moves management and pipeline development processes within Raiser’s Edge and monitor that process with the COO and Development Team.
- Manage/track time and activity with a focus on a high level of donor contact and stewardship activity.
- Utilize Raisers Edge to implement a track actions, moves management and pipeline development – monitor and report on that process with the Director of Development.
- Attend various special events, promotions, community events, serving as a representative for the GVFB.
Prospect Research
- Conduct research to identify, analyze and qualify potential and current donors, with particular attention paid to matters relating to wealth capacity and philanthropic inclination (LIA).
- Utilize iWave software to assist with identification of capacity.
Organization and Regulatory Compliance
- Maintain a complete and timely record of contacts, proposals, tasks and other details with prospects, donors and other records in Raiser’s Edge.
- Presents regular Raiser’s Edge reports, updates and other information to leadership.
- Adhere to national standards of ethical fundraising, best practices, policies and related guidelines including AFP Code of Ethics, Donor Bill of Rights and best practices.
Personal Attributes and Core Skills
- Excellent problem-solving skills and detail-oriented.
- A self-starter who can work well independently with minimal direction.
- Proven ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks with hard deadlines.
- Applies an analytic perspective of fundraising and comfortable with analytical tools including RE queries, exports and Excel.
- Superior communication and relationship building skillset that translates into building a philanthropic commitment between constituents and the organization.
Qualifications and Experience
- 3+ years of direct experience in fundraising, planned or legacy giving, and/or donor relations or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience with fundraising software, reporting and databases; iWave andRaiser’s Edge experience is an asset.
- Knowledge of national standards of ethical fundraising, best practices, policies and related guidelines.
- Knowledge of emerging issues, trends, programs and opportunities in fundraising locally.
- CRA guidelines and other legislation and/or regulations pertaining to fundraising and/or non-for-profits.
