Who We Are
The GVFB provides assistance to approximately 15,000 people monthly across Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster and the North Shore. We also provide food support to 130+ community and provincial agencies such as housing agencies, women and children’s shelters, transition homes and after school programs, which in turn provide hot meals and snacks to thousands of people each week, including people who are unhoused.
Our mission is providing healthy food to those in need. Our vision is to create healthy communities through fair and effective food systems. Currently, the GVFB receives, purchases, and distributes 8 M lbs of food each year.

Position Overview
The Food Preservation Associate oversees weekly food preservation tasks, including leading volunteer activities and supervision, and ensuring the food preservation area is clean, equipped, and organized. This individual will complete any necessary research, communicate with partners and stakeholders, and lead various projects including research and development, taste testing exercises, product research, and package design.
Key Responsibilities
- Coordinate Food Preservation activities and ensure objectives are successfully completed.
- Lead Food Preservation documentation and data reporting, including monthly updates.
- Lead volunteer activities and ensure appropriate supervision and training.
- Lead various projects including research and development, taste testing, product research, package design, and other projects as assigned.
- Maintain food preservation equipment and inventory, and ensure cleanliness.
- Support the Agencies Partnerships and Operations Manager with project planning including budgeting and cost comparisons.
- Support meal and snack prep for GVFB events, such as Townhalls.
- Complete other duties as assigned by the Agencies Partnerships and Operations Manager.

Qualifications and Experience
- Post-secondary education in food preservation, culinary arts, or a combination of relevant work experience.
- Marketing, sales, and design process experience is advantageous.
- Valid food safety certification.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint).
- Familiarity with non-profit organizations is ideal.
Physical Requirements
- Exposure to ambient temperatures and noisy conditions.
- The ability to walk and stand throughout shift.
- Bending and lifting boxes up to 50 lbs. intermittently.
