Celebrating the Ownership of the Greater Vancouver Food Bank’s First Ever Permanent Home
The Greater Vancouver Food Bank has officially purchased its first permanent facility, a milestone that marks the end of a long journey and the beginning of a new chapter in our mission to address food insecurity!
In 2023, we found a space located at 3454 Lougheed Hwy, that offered everything we needed: proximity to transit, expanded refrigeration, loading bays, and enough room to consolidate our teams under one roof. For the first time in years, we had stability.
Now, thanks to the generosity of our donors, partners, and supporters, we’ve purchased the building. This is more than a home—it’s a foundation for the future.
Owning our facility means we can reduce costs, plan for the future and expand our impact. We are proud to launch FRESH Start Program this year, which connects clients to services that address the root causes of food insecurity. Through this program, clients are offered access to employment, immigration and mental health services through like-minded partners, right in the upstairs offices at the GVFB. Creating a single intake process for all services allows for more effective and dignified solutions to interconnected issues and enables us to actively work towards poverty reduction.
In addition to expanding client services, having a permanent home and a stable location allowed us to build the infrastructure needed to continue redirecting millions of pounds of food through the BC Farmer Tax Credit. This facility houses over 19,000 cu. Ft. of refrigeration, a vital part of our ability to serve over 80% fresh, nutritious foods as part of our weekly menu. Having adequate refrigeration allows the GVFB to continue to work with local farmers and accept the over 11 million lbs. of food we saw last year, promoting sustainability across BC and increasing access to fresh, healthy food for those in need.
We achieved this historic milestone through the support of our partnerships, long-term donors and the community, who have allowed us to ensure our clients can count on us—today, tomorrow, and for decades to come.
Thank you for being part of this journey. Your support has made this milestone possible, and with your continued partnership, we will keep building a future where everyone has access to the food and dignity they deserve.
