Role Overview:

Volunteers will play a key role in restocking the shelves with fresh, frozen, and pantry items. This is a great opportunity for your group to work together, ensure the FIFO method is applied to reduce food waste, and directly contribute to supporting the community.

Responsibilities:
  • Quality check donated perishables, including fruits, vegetables, dairy, and deli products, adhering to GVFB food safety and best before date practices;β€―
  • Dispose of non-consumable products intoβ€―appropriate wasteβ€―streams (recycling,Β ReFeedΒ bins,β€―Depack);β€―Β 
  • Efficiently organize food to ensure proper placement and easy access;β€―Β 
  • Rotate items based on first in, first out (FIFO) method;β€―Β 
  • Ensureβ€―marketβ€―areas are well stocked and merchandised to GVFB standards;β€―Β 
  • Sweep and clean the facility to maintain GVFB standards;β€―Β 
  • Clean the workstation at the end of each shift; empty waste bins, wipe all surfaces and mop the floor;β€―β€―Β 
  • Monitor parking lot and provide directions to Agencies and vehicles as neededβ€―(Vancouver only);β€―Β 
  • Efficiently complete other market support-related tasks as assigned byβ€―Agencies staff.β€―Β 
Core Skills and Abilities:
  • Detail-oriented to ensure that food is accurately quality checked;β€―Β 
  • Ability to follow instructions, procedures, and safety guidelines to ensure the quality of preserved food;β€―Β 
  • Ability to work independently and perform tasksβ€―in a timely manner;β€―Β 
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a small team of volunteers;β€―Β 
  • Ability to use manual pallet jack or a willingness to learn how to use (training provided by staff on-site).β€―Β 
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to stand for three hours;β€―Β 
  • Ability to bend, twist, andβ€―lift upβ€―to 40β€―lbsβ€―safely;β€―Β 
  • Ability to complete repetitive tasks;β€―Β 
  • Comfortable working in a temperature-controlled environment (typically set at 2 to 4 degrees Celsius). Jackets and gloves are provided on-site.β€―Β
