Did you know that 17% of our Food Bank clients are seniors? This summer, we launched our brand new Seniors’ Program, a specialized nutrition program developed in consultation with a dietician for our clients aged 65+.
With so many people to support, the Seniors’ Program is the most expensive supplemental nutritional program that we run. It provides foods that are high in lean protein, low in sodium and easy to eat. Some menu items include low sodium, lean deli meat, eggs, whole-grain bread, cheese, yogurt, nutrition shakes and soft produce.
You are helping seniors like Yolanda this Fall, a former volunteer at the Food Bank for 16 years and a current Food Bank client. Yolanda is caring for her grandson because his mom was laid off during the pandemic and his dad’s hours were cut in half. Yolanda is doing her best to help her son out with expenses while also trying to feed a growing young boy.
When Yolanda was volunteering at the Food Bank, she made sure that people didn’t feel ashamed of reaching out and asking for help when it was needed. She says, “I told a lot of people to put their shame aside, put their pride aside, do the right thing and use the Food Bank because it’s here to help!”
Yolanda visited the Food Bank recently for some help. She says, “My grandson, he eats everything in the fridge. But it’s really been a blessing, to be honest.” Yolanda and her family are extremely grateful to generous donors like you.
