Greater Vancouver Food Bank Hosted Free Apple Day in Burnaby

Burnaby, BC, Monday January 26th:Β TheΒ Greater Vancouver Food Bank (GVFB), successfully hosted a Free Apple Day on Monday, January 26, providing fresh apples at no cost to community members in Burnaby.Β

The event took place from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the GVFB’s Burnaby location at 8345 Winston Street. Community members were invited to pick up fresh apples, with a limit of five pounds per person, while supplies lasted.Β The community distribution was organized in response to a large volume of apples that needed to be shared quickly to ensure they were enjoyed at peak freshness, beyond what could be distributed through regular client channels in the availableΒ timeframe.Β

Free Apple Day was made possible through the support of a generous donor,Β Star Produce,Β who donated more thanΒ 37,000 poundsΒ ofΒ apples to support the event. β€œWe’re proud to donate these apples to help support access to fresh, healthy produce in ourΒ communities,” saidΒ Star Produce.Β This significant contribution helped ensure thousands of pounds of fresh, nutritious produce were distributed directly to community members in need.

Β β€œThere’s no shortage of food, only a distribution problem,” said David Long, CEO of the Greater Vancouver Food Bank. Events like Free Apple DayΒ demonstrateΒ how, with the right partnerships andΒ logistics, surplus food can be redirected to nourish our communities.

The event was part of the GVFB’s ongoing efforts to improve access to nutritious food and support people facing food insecurity across the region. It drew strong community interest and enabled the direct distribution of healthy, locally sourced produce.Β

The Greater Vancouver Food Bank extendsΒ its gratitude to Star Produce, as well as its dedicated volunteers, staff, and partners for helping make the event a success. They also thanked the community for its involvement and continued support.Β
