GVFB Shared More Than 11,000 lbs. of Zucchini at Free Zucchini Day in Burnaby
Burnaby, BC, Tuesday, July 21, 2026: A seasonal abundance of zucchini became an opportunity to share more than
12,800 lbs. of fresh food with the public when the Greater Vancouver Food Bank (GVFB) hosted Free Zucchini Day in Burnaby on Monday, July 13.
Held from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the GVFBβs Burnaby location at 8345 Winston Street, the event welcomed community members to pick up a full bag of fresh zucchini, along with bread at no cost while supplies lasted. Strong interest throughout the afternoon made the event an overwhelming success.
GVFB distributed over five pallets of zucchini, weighing 11,448 lbs. in total, and approximately 1,200 loaves of bread, weighing 1,380 lbs. Together, the three-hour event moved more than 12,800 lbs. of food directly into the community.

βWhen fresh food is available in abundance, the challenge is making sure it reaches people while it is at its best,β
said David Long, CEO of the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.

βFree Zucchini Day shows what can happen when farmer partners, the GVFB team and dedicated volunteers work together. We know there is no shortage of food; there is a distribution problem, and partnerships like this help us solve it.β
Free Zucchini Day builds on the GVFBβs ongoing work with farmers and industry partners to redirect surplus food through efficient distribution, innovation and strong partnerships. The Greater Vancouver Food Bank extends its gratitude to our Fraser Valley farmer partner who made this possible, as well as the GVFB team and dedicated volunteers who acted quickly to make the event possible.
